Background of the Study
Terminally ill patients face significant emotional and psychological challenges, including anxiety, depression, and fear, as they confront the end of life. Emotional support from healthcare providers, particularly nurses, plays a critical role in improving the quality of life for these patients. Nurses are uniquely positioned to offer emotional care, as they spend a significant amount of time with patients and are often the first to notice changes in emotional well-being (Tsoi et al., 2024). Emotional support can be provided through listening, reassurance, providing comfort, and facilitating conversations about death and dying in a supportive environment.
In Gombe State, where healthcare infrastructure is limited and palliative care services are still developing, the emotional well-being of terminally ill patients is often neglected. While medical interventions are essential for managing symptoms, emotional and psychological care is equally crucial for enhancing patients' dignity and quality of life during their final days. The role of nurses in providing emotional support to terminally ill patients in Gombe State requires evaluation, particularly in terms of the approaches used, challenges faced, and the impact of such support on patient well-being. This study aims to evaluate the impact of emotional support by nurses on terminally ill patients in Gombe State.
Statement of the Problem
In Gombe State, the care of terminally ill patients often focuses primarily on physical health, with limited attention paid to the emotional and psychological needs of these patients. Nurses, who are well-placed to provide holistic care, may not always receive adequate training or support to effectively address the emotional needs of terminally ill patients. This study will assess how emotional support provided by nurses influences the emotional and psychological well-being of terminally ill patients in Gombe State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the emotional support provided by nurses to terminally ill patients in Gombe State.
2. To evaluate the impact of emotional support on the psychological well-being of terminally ill patients.
3. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in providing emotional support to terminally ill patients and recommend strategies for improvement.
Research Questions
1. What type of emotional support do nurses provide to terminally ill patients in Gombe State?
2. How does emotional support from nurses impact the psychological well-being of terminally ill patients in Gombe State?
3. What are the challenges faced by nurses in providing emotional support to terminally ill patients in Gombe State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Emotional support provided by nurses significantly improves the psychological well-being of terminally ill patients in Gombe State.
2. Nurses face significant challenges in providing emotional support to terminally ill patients due to limited training and resources.
3. Providing nurses with specialized training in palliative and emotional care will enhance their ability to offer emotional support to terminally ill patients.
